New Automated Security Lanes Will Be Demonstrated At IAH By United!

Six automated security lanes have been installed by United Airlines for international travelers which connect through Bush Intercontinental Airport.

Used during the Transportation Security Administration screening, these new lanes are identical to the lane system installed in Terminal D by the Houston Airport System.

Their bags automatically move through X-ray screening after they place their bins on the conveyor belt. For tracking and diverting bags needing extra scrutiny, RFID technology is used.

The person can skip ahead and not wait on the first or second person to finish if that person is the third traveler and gets his or her stuff on the conveyor belt faster than the first or second traveler. TSA officers examine pictures of that bag from a separate room as the luggage goes through the X-Ray machine.

The traveler or a TSA officer will place the bin in a return receptacle when passengers have completed the screening and removed their items from the bins. Rather than relocating bins, a conveyor belt carries it to the front of the line which gives TSA officers more time to focus on security.

The bins are larger overall and shallower than the old ones.

United Airlines and TSA officials on Thursday demonstrated the new lanes to members of the media.
