Alaska Airlines

One of the largest airlines in the US, Alaska Airlines announced that those passengers who are boarding Alaska flights will need to check their carry-on baggage. The airline is shrinking the dimensions of the carry-on allowance to ensure that passengers have no problems on any other flights on their itinerary. Thus, it is imperative for the passengers to know all about Alaska baggage rules while traveling with Alaska Airlines.

Alaska Airlines announced on its website that starting on June 4, they will no longer accept carry-on bags over the dimensions of 22” x 14” x 9”. The airline reduces the size of allowable carry-on bags from the current permitted measurement of 24” x 17” x 10”.

Alaska Airlines explains the reason behind this, “to make sure that your carry-on bag will be accepted aboard all the flights within your itinerary.”

The airline also writes that the currently allowed measurement is “larger than most other international and domestic airlines allow.” And also said larger bags can cause problems with connecting flights.

Alaska said the new restrictions will “help you avoid carry-on bag size conflicts and make connections with other airlines easier during your future trips,” as connecting flights from other carriers may have smaller allowances.

This is true that aside from a few competing airlines, most major airlines, including United, American, and Delta, all allow the 22” x 14” x 9” measurement for carrying – on bags. But now, Alaska is also switching to June.

The Alaska Airlines carry on size policy has been revised to bring uniformity for the passengers who need to travel in connecting flights. This policy will exclude any kind of confusion about the permissible baggage size in different flights for the passengers. Like, onboarding another flight after Alaska Airlines, the passengers do not have to face the hassles of paying extra or managing something for their baggage size now after the implementation of this new Alaska Airline baggage rule.

On the other hand, Southwest Airlines still allows bags with a measurement of 24” x 16” x 10”.

While there are still a few exceptions like Southwest Airlines, it was in the year 2015 that the International Air Transport Association came out with a new regulation stating 21.5” x 13.5” x 7.5” to be the ideal size for carry-on baggage for flights. Thus, many of the airlines have maintained the maximum size of 22” x 14” x 9” and now Alaska Airlines carry on bag size will be also similar to the other Airlines.

Apart from this, Alaska Airlines include some exceptions for the carry-on size allowance, but those items will need to be stowed in the aircraft cabin.

The Exceptions Includes:

  • Small musical instruments
  • Paintings
  • Delicate scientific equipment
  • Fishing poles
  • Human organs.

Another reason stated by Alaska Airlines is the global concern of managing overhead space. With this new Alaska Airlines carry on luggage size, the overhead space issue can be sorted to a certain extent.
