In the United States, Icelandair has been on a roll as of late launching new routes to Cleveland, Baltimore, Kansas City and Dallas. The airline put San Francisco back on its rapidly expanding route map over the weekend when it resumed flights between SFO and Reykjavik, Iceland, which is the airline’s hub.

The service which until 2007 served SFO, marks a return to California for Icelandair. It’s the longest flight in its network at 4,204 miles each way. Between Keflavik Airport and SFO flight times are about nine hours westbound and eight hours and 25 minutes eastbound.

The service is operated four times a week on Saturdays, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays with wide-body jets on Boeing 767-300ER.

Most of the flying in the network is handled by the airline’s best bet Boeing 757-200 single-aisle jets, but the routes that see high demand, Icelandair assigns its bigger double-aisle Boeing 767s. popular addition for the carrier is expected to be San Francisco.

To check out the seats and other spaces, Icelandair invited passengers onboard the jet Saturday during a gate celebration at SFO for a slice of “gate cake”.
